As of May 2006, the rack price of ethanol was $3.04 versus $2.18 for unleaded gasoline--a difference of 86 cents per gallon. Unleaded gasoline's average rack price in May was 44 percent higher than a year ago. The rack price of ethanol in April more than doubled the price in April of last year. The same thing can be said for the month of May. The price of ethanol in May more than doubled what the price was in May 2005. The ethanol rack price was 60 cents higher in May compared to the price in April due to demand exceeding supply. Demand is high as a result of the phase out of MTBE.
