Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants Are Popular

As of February 3, 2010, the deadline for Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants, 121 eligible cities and counties (16 First Class Cities, 26 Second Class Cities, 23 Villages and 37 Counties) applied for $12,604,637 in grants for projects totaling $19,218,134. Applicants could submit multiple projects and did: 195 energy efficiency retrofits, 22 street lighting and traffic signals and 1 renewable energy project. street light A total of 218 projects were submitted.

Only $8,634,150 is available for grants, so approximately $4,000,000 in proposed projects will not be funded.

Grant applications are now in review. Conditional award selections, subject to U.S. Department of Energy review, are expected on or before May 1, 2010.

More than 583 counties, cities and towns in the state were eligible to apply for up to $250,000 for three types of projects — building retrofits, street and traffic lighting and renewable energy projects. Grant applications were due February 3, 2010.
