Key to Recycled Product Codes
The recycled product code symbols used on this web site are based, in part, on Recycled Content Certification Standards established by Scientific Certification Systems and manufacturers' information. Scientific Certification Systems is a neutral, third-party environmental certification organization.
Founded in 1984, Scientific Certification Systems' mission has been to spur the private and public sectors toward more environmentally sustainable policy planning, product design, management systems and production operations.

What the Symbols Mean

Post Consumer Waste
A product or package which has been discarded by an individual, commercial enterprise, or other public or private entity after having fulfilled its intended application or use. The number inside the symbol indicates the percentage of post consumer waste in the product. If no number appears in the symbol, the amount of recycled content is not known or could not be verified.

Post Industrial Waste
A material which has been generated as a by-product of a given process which has properties significantly different than those of the original material and therefore, in its current form, cannot be recycled back through the same general process. The number inside the symbol indicates the percentage of post industrial waste in the product. If no number appears in the symbol, the amount of recycled content is not known or could not be verified.

Industrial Scrap
In contrast to post-industrial waste, industrial scrap is material which has been generated as a by-product of a given process which has properties allowing it to be recycled back through the same general process.  The number inside the symbol indicates the percentage of industrial scrap in the product. If no number appears in the symbol, the amount of recycled content is not known or could not be verified.
Pre-Consumer Materials
This category includes materials and by-products or scrap from industry that have not yet reached a consumer or business for their use. These materials are reused within the same manufacturing process. The number inside the symbol indicates the percentage of recycled content in the product. If no number appears in the symbol, the amount of recycled content is not known or could not be verified.
Recovered Materials
This classification refers to the universe of materials that count as recycled content, both pre-consumer and post-consumer. It is consistent with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's definition which includes all materials produced after the initial process. If no number appears in the symbol, the amount of recycled content is not known or could not be verified.
Recycled Content (Uncertified)
The number inside the symbol indicates the percentage of recycled content in the product. If no number appears in the symbol, the amount of recycled content is not known or could not be verified.

Green Building Materials
but with NO Recycled Content.
