Energy is the foundation of our productivity. Business, industry and agricultural production rely on energy. Without it, the economy of Nebraska would grind to a halt.
Energy efficiency and emerging renewable energy resources are economic opportunities for the state. As a state, we need to agree on how best to maximize these opportunities. While we look for new opportunities, we cannot ignore the reality that we are dependent upon other states and nations for our energy needs.
With an updated state energy plan, Nebraska should be able to chart a course that maintains a balance between economic growth, environmental stewardship and energy security.
The initial comment period has ended. More information will be available in early 2009.
The Process
The next step in creating a New State Energy Plan will be to provide a draft of the new Plan to Nebraskans. The draft Plan will be made available on line in January 2009 and will reflect the recommendations Nebraskans made during the first round of meetings and on the Energy Office website between October 29 and December 1, 2008. Comments on the draft Plan may be made in writing, by email or online.
During January and February, 2009 the Nebraska Energy Office will review the comments on the first draft and prepare a final draft of the new Nebraska Energy Plan. The new Plan will identify regulatory, statutory, administrative and collaborative activities to implement to move the state forward.
